Meet Okema Charles, a 26-year-old young individual from the Yepa B Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) youth group, part of the transformative Young Africa Works project in Uganda. Before becoming a member of the Yepa B youth group, Charles had little confidence in speaking in public and advocating for the rights of young people in his community. Additionally, he had never considered farming as a viable business opportunity.

However, everything changed for the better when he joined the youth group. Thanks to the Young Africa Works initiative, he underwent various training sessions, including community conversations, VSLA methodology, financial literacy, business planning, and youth-led research. These trainings equipped him with the knowledge and skills needed to improve his life.

Eager to enhance his well-being, Charles decided to venture into simsim farming during the season. He diligently saved UGX 26,000 and used it to purchase high-quality simsim seeds from an authorized dealer within the sub-county. Utilizing four acres of land generously offered by his family—made possible by his advocacy within the youth group—he began cultivating his simsim garden.

With the support of Yepa B VSLA youth group, Charles borrowed UGX 80,000, which he invested in essential tasks such as weeding and nurturing his growing simsim garden.

Throughout the process, Charles showed exceptional dedication and passion for his newfound venture. During an interview with the program specialist, he confidently shared his aspirations. He expressed that he anticipates a fruitful harvest, expecting to gather more than six bags of simsim. The proceeds from this harvest will be the stepping stone to realizing his dream career: establishing a produce business.

Reflecting on his journey, Charles acknowledged the transformative impact of the mindset change trainings facilitated through community conversations. He emphasized how these sessions had completely altered his perspective on commercial farming—a positive shift he had never experienced before joining Young Africa Works in Uganda.

In gratitude, Charles extended his appreciation to MUCOBADI, GOAL Uganda, and the foundation for creating and implementing this life-changing youth program. The initiative not only empowered young people like him to embrace commercial farming but also fostered a positive attitude towards agriculture within the entire sub-county and district.

Through Young Africa Works, Charles’ success story stands as a testament to the significant change and opportunities that can be brought about when dedicated organizations come together to uplift and empower the youth of Uganda. With newfound knowledge, skills, and determination, the future holds endless possibilities for Charles and his fellow young entrepreneurs, paving the way for a prosperous and thriving community.
