As the world observes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17, 2023, the focus is on the theme, “Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting dignity in practice for all.” In this context, the efforts of MUCOBADI’s Young Africa Works Program in Northern Uganda stand out as a significant contribution towards realizing the goal of eradicating poverty by promoting sustainable livelihoods and providing essential agro and business support services.

Sustainable Livelihood Achievements:
The Young Africa Works Program in Northern Uganda, specifically the Markets for Youth initiative, has made commendable strides in fostering sustainable livelihoods among the youth. With 3,383 active youths engaged in Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), including 1,119 males, 2,264 females, 183 persons with disabilities (PWDs), and 264 refugees, the program has reached diverse segments of the population.
Diversification and Skill Development:
Young Africa Works doesn’t just provide financial assistance but also focuses on skill development. Through partnerships with TAFF ASSURED Enterprise LTD, 20 youths were trained in various ventures, including fishery, beekeeping, kitchen gardening, poultry keeping, and rabbit rearing. Such diversified skills empower the youth to explore multiple avenues for income generation.
Success Stories:
Notable success stories include the St. Mary’s youth group in Abim district, which started a catering services enterprise, and a female youth from Kotido, Margaret, who won a pitching competition organized by Mercy Corps, securing 14,000,000 UGX for her poultry input shop. Another inspiring story is that of Akello Betty Sharon from Abim, a member of St. Mary’s catering youth group, who successfully pitched a business plan and was awarded a brand new grinding machine through the youth-built project.
MUCOBADI’s Young Africa Works Program in Northern Uganda is a beacon of hope in the fight against poverty. By emphasizing decent work, social protection, and skill development, the program is not only empowering the youth economically but also fostering a sense of dignity and self-worth. As the world commemorates the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the success stories from Northern Uganda serve as a testament to the transformative impact of targeted programs that prioritize the holistic development of individuals and communities.
