Cosmas Adyebo, a 23-year-old resident of Bipong Village in Kitgum District and a member of the Future Masters Youth Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), exemplifies hope and inspiration. Despite the challenges posed by his disability, Cosmas has successfully embraced farming as a business, a transformation made possible by the mindset change training provided by MUCOBADI.

A New Perspective on Farming

Before his involvement with MUCOBADI, Cosmas viewed farming merely as a laborious task fraught with difficulties such as limited access to inputs and markets. However, the comprehensive training sessions on financial literacy, business selection and management, and active participation in community conversations ignited a new passion within him. Among various fields, Cosmas found himself particularly drawn to maize production.

The Journey Begins

Determined to turn his newfound interest into a profitable venture, Cosmas took a bold step. He borrowed 100,000 Ugandan shillings from the youth VSLA group and purchased maize seeds of the DK777 variety from a local input dealer. This investment marked the beginning of his journey in commercial maize farming.

During a recent interaction, Cosmas shared, “Before this mindset change training, participation in community conversations, and experience sharing by MUCOBADI, I used not to take farming as a source of income. But after engaging with MUCOBADI, I developed an interest in practicing maize production for commercial purposes. This is how far I have reached with my dream.”

Reaping the Rewards

Cosmas’s dedication and hard work are starting to pay off. He is optimistic about earning at least 800,000 Ugandan shillings from his half-acre maize farm, based on the favorable market conditions within the district. This anticipated income not only signifies financial growth but also a significant milestone towards achieving his dreams.

“My major aim is to build a semi-permanent house and also continue with commercial farming as a business,” Cosmas said with a hopeful smile.

A Message of Empowerment

Cosmas’s journey is a testament to the power of mindset change and the importance of community support. His story serves as a powerful message to fellow youth, especially those with disabilities. “We all have equal opportunity to engage in commercial farming, and this can help to change our livelihood through access to income,” Cosmas advises.

Gratitude and Acknowledgment

Cosmas extends his heartfelt appreciation to MUCOBADI and GOAL Uganda for their unwavering support. The training and empowerment programs have not only transformed his life but have also instilled a sense of purpose and confidence in many other youths in the community.
