To foster community development and empower young individuals, MUCOBADI, under the Young Africa Works Markets for Youth Program, supported by GOAL Uganda and the Mastercard Foundation, has made significant progress by supporting youth groups across the districts of Abim, Kotido, Kitgum, Karenga, Lamwo, and Pader in the Acholi and Karamoja subregions. This initiative led to the selection and training of 70 youth champions, who are now spearheading transformative change within their communities. Here is an in-depth look at the journey of these emerging leaders.

Selection and Training: Building the Foundation

MUCOBADI’s approach began with the careful selection of youth champions from 35 youth groups, identifying two representatives per group, resulting in a balanced cohort of 70 champions (30 male and 40 female) from the six districts. The process was meticulous, ensuring that the chosen individuals were not only passionate but also committed to the cause of community development.

Training of Trainers (TOT): Equipping the Champions

The initial training phase was conducted over previous quarters, focusing on a comprehensive Training of Trainers (TOT) program. The objectives of the TOT training were multi-faceted, aiming to equip youth champions with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead effectively within their communities. Here’s a breakdown of the core objectives and outcomes:

1. Effective Communication and Leadership

One of the primary goals was to prepare youth champions to present information effectively, respond to participant questions, and lead activities that reinforce learning and community change. This aspect of the training emphasized clear communication, active listening, and confident public speaking.

2. Application of Current Practices

Youth champions were trained to apply current practices in delivering training to other participants based on evidence-based programs. This involved understanding and implementing proven methodologies that ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the training delivered.

3. Facilitative Skills for Engagement

To promote participant engagement, reflective practice, critical thinking, and skill acquisition, the training focused on developing facilitative skills. This included techniques such as brainstorming, role-playing, and practice sessions, which are instrumental in fostering an interactive learning environment.

4. Mastery of Key Training Strategies

Youth champions were trained to master key training strategies commonly used in community development initiatives. These strategies are crucial for creating dynamic and impactful training sessions that resonate with participants and drive meaningful change.

5. Efficient and Effective Facilitation

Building and supporting youth champions to facilitate their respective community conversations efficiently and effectively was a cornerstone of the training. This preparation ensures that the champions can lead discussions and activities that address community-specific issues and foster collective problem-solving.

Rolling Out Community Conversations

Armed with the skills and knowledge from the TOT training, youth champions developed action plans to roll out Community Conversation (CC) sessions within their respective communities. These sessions are designed to create safe spaces for dialogue, promote inclusivity, and address key issues such as safeguarding, gender equality, and social inclusion.

Beyond Training: Fostering Agribusiness Skills

An essential component of MUCOBADI’s initiative is to build a pool of competent youth champions who can also teach business skills and the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) methodology. By incorporating agribusiness training, the program aims to facilitate economic empowerment and improve the livelihoods of youth through sustainable agricultural practices.

The Impact: A Ripple Effect of Change

The ripple effect of MUCOBADI’s youth championship training is already evident in the communities. Youth champions are not only leading community conversations but also inspiring their peers to engage in meaningful activities that promote development and social cohesion. By empowering these young leaders, MUCOBADI is laying the groundwork for a future where youth are at the helm of community transformation.
