In the face of entrenched gender and social norms, Loyce, a resident of Karenga District in the Karamoja region, has emerged as a leader and advocate for young women through MUCOBADI’s Young Africa Works (YAW) – Markets for Youth program. This initiative is transforming lives by equipping youth champions with the knowledge and skills needed to overcome obstacles and drive lasting change in their communities.
Overcoming Barriers to Empowerment
The journey of young women in the Karamoja region is fraught with challenges. Cultural beliefs and traditional practices often restrict their access to essential resources such as land and finance, impeding their progress. Loyce, like many others, faced these barriers head-on. Growing up, she struggled with low self-esteem, child marriage, and a lack of educational support due to poverty. However, her determination to make a difference in her life and community led her to the YAW program in 2022.
A New Beginning with YAW
Upon joining the YAW program, Loyce received training in mindset change, safeguarding, gender and social inclusion, business skills, and financial literacy. Her leadership potential quickly became evident, and she was elected as a Youth Champion by her peers. MUCOBADI’s training empowered Loyce to become a vocal advocate for young women, championing their rights and access to services. Her efforts have been pivotal in helping young women secure resources such as agricultural inputs, training, and support from government programs in the district.
Leading the Way for Young Women
Loyce’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Despite significant cultural barriers, she has emerged as a strong voice for young girls and women in her community. Through her involvement in the YAW program, Loyce has gained the confidence and skills to represent young women at various forums, including quarterly reviews, coordination meetings, budget conferences, and community engagements. She has also played a key role in organizing community conversations and supporting other youth champions in conducting youth-led research on factors affecting young people’s participation in farming activities.
Community Impact and Success Stories
The impact of Loyce’s advocacy and leadership extends beyond her personal achievements. Her efforts have led to significant positive changes within her community. Through her advocacy, Loyce has helped shift cultural norms that traditionally hinder access to resources and girls’ rights. Her representation has improved access to resources and motivated many young women to engage in dignified and fulfilling work to support their families.
One notable success is Loyce’s involvement in linking her group, Turukan Integrated Youth Group, to the Arid Land Development Programme (ADP). The group received training and mentorship in crafts-making, leading to the production and sale of items such as shoes, bangles, necklaces, and belts. This initiative has provided a source of income for many families in the community.
Additionally, Loyce’s connection with the Parish Development Program (PDM) in 2023 resulted in a significant financial boost. She received one million Ugandan shillings, which she used to hire a tractor, open land, and purchase maize and bean seeds. Her farming efforts are expected to yield a substantial harvest, enabling her to start her own business and further support her community.
A Vision for the Future
Loyce’s journey with the YAW program is far from over. She remains committed to advocacy, mentorship, and creating awareness about opportunities for young women. Her goal is to link more group members and young women to resources that will enable them to become independent, empowered youth leaders. Loyce’s story is a powerful reminder of the potential within every young woman and the transformative impact of programs like MUCOBADI’s Young Africa Works.
