For a long time, agriculture in Uganda has often been overlooked as a viable business, especially by the youth. However, a quiet revolution is unfolding in Ogul village, Kitgum district. At the forefront of this change is Okot Patrick, a 28-year-old farmer, who is proving that farming can be both profitable and sustainable. With the guidance and support from MUCOBADI, Patrick is redefining agricultural success and inspiring others to follow his lead.
The Journey of Okot Patrick
Okot Patrick, a member of the Ogul United Youth VSLA group, had never considered commercial farming as a viable source of income. The challenges of limited access to inputs and markets had always deterred him. However, everything changed when he participated in MUCOBADI’s mindset change training. This training, which covered financial literacy, business selection, and management, sparked his interest in maize production as a business.
MUCOBADI, a community-based organization, has been instrumental in transforming the agricultural landscape in Northern Uganda. Through their training programs, they equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to view farming as a lucrative business opportunity, comparable to trading or other traditional businesses.
Embracing Agriculture as a Business
The impact of MUCOBADI’s training on Patrick was profound. Inspired by the new perspectives he gained, Patrick decided to venture into maize farming. He borrowed 60,000 UGX from his youth VSLA group to partially weed his maize garden. Today, he proudly manages 5 acres of maize, with the expectation of earning over 1,900,000 UGX from his harvest, thanks to the ready market within the district.
Patrick’s vision extends beyond just this season’s profits. His major aim is to build a semi-permanent house to use as a storage facility, allowing him to expand his commercial farming activities. He has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for other youth in his community, encouraging them to change their mindset towards farming.
The Broader Impact of MUCOBADI
Patrick’s success story is just one of many in Northern Uganda. MUCOBADI, alongside partners like GOAL Uganda, tirelessly supports and empowers youth through engagement in commercial farming. Their approach not only provides practical skills but also instills a sense of entrepreneurship and financial independence among young people.
The influence of MUCOBADI’s programs is evident in the growing number of youth who are now actively participating in agriculture as a business. By changing their perceptions and providing the necessary tools and support, MUCOBADI is fostering a generation of young entrepreneurs who view farming as a sustainable and profitable career path.
A Call to Action
Patrick’s advice to his peers is simple yet powerful: change your negative mindset towards farming. His journey from skepticism to success illustrates the potential that lies in embracing agriculture as a business. With the right training, support, and mindset, the youth of Northern Uganda can transform their lives and communities through farming.
MUCOBADI’s efforts are a testament to the impact of targeted empowerment programs. By continuing to support and expand these initiatives, we can ensure that more young people see agriculture not just as a means of subsistence but as a viable and rewarding business opportunity.
