Strengthening Succession Rights for Girls

For several months now, MUCOBADI, in partnership with Terre des Hommes Netherlands, has been working on the Succession Act Awareness campaign—an initiative aimed at protecting girls’ and women’s succession rights across Uganda. This campaign has focused on raising awareness about succession rights and estate planning, empowering communities to make informed choices for a more secure future.

        
Breaking Down the 2022 Succession Amendment Act

One major focus of the campaign has been helping people understand the 2022 Succession Amendment Act. This law marks a big step forward for spousal rights in Uganda, guaranteeing surviving spouses 20% of their deceased partner’s estate, whether or not they had children. This protection ensures that spouses are not left vulnerable and helps create a fairer inheritance process for all.

Why Estate Planning is Important

This She Leads Project initiative has emphasized three key aspects of estate planning to help communities safeguard their assets and rights:

  1. Writing a Will
    • A will gives individuals the ability to choose who inherits their property, whether it’s family, friends, or charities.
    • It also creates a clear plan for asset distribution, helping to prevent conflicts.
    • Above all, a will ensures that a person’s wishes are honored.
  2. Knowing the Legal Requirements
    • Through this campaign, we’ve been educating communities on the need to obtain letters of administration to legally manage or distribute an estate.
    • This step is essential for protecting beneficiaries and ensuring that estates are handled appropriately.
  3. Understanding Accessible Legal Processes
    • The campaign has encouraged Ugandans to file for letters of administration in local courts to make the process simpler and more accessible.

With She Leads, MUCOBADI has been working to create a future where everyone understands their inheritance rights and responsibilities. By educating both women and men on these important issues, we’re helping communities become stronger, more informed, and more equitable.
