Doreen, aged 23, resides in Kyamatyasi village within the Nakaseke district of Uganda. She has emerged as a dedicated advocate for the rights of girls and young women. Previously challenged by economic adversity and a lack of opportunities, Doreen’s life underwent a profound transformation upon her enrollment in the She Leads program. Life Prior to She Leads: Doreen’s upbringing was marked by resilience and determination. Despite economic constraints, she pursued education beyond primary level, facing financial hurdles every step of the way. With her mother’s unwavering support and her own hard work on farms and odd jobs, she managed to complete her studies up to senior four level. Yet, the path to success was arduous, and basic necessities often remained out of reach for her family.

Transformative Path with She Leads: In June 2021, Doreen’s life took a significant turn when she learned about the She Leads program, implemented by MUCOBADI, through a Village Health Team member. Joining She Leads opened doors to training, mentorship, and skill development. Through advocacy training and business skills sessions, Doreen gained confidence and expertise. She established a salon, not just as a source of income but as a symbol of her newfound empowerment, earning 1.7 Euros daily.

Empowered Leader and Advocate: Doreen’s journey with She Leads didn’t stop at personal success; it ignited a passion for advocacy and community empowerment. She became a beacon of change, actively engaging in initiatives to raise awareness on crucial issues like child marriage, teenage pregnancies, and girls’ rights violations. Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed, garnering support from local leaders, religious figures, and male champions alike.

Impact Beyond Borders: Doreen’s advocacy extended beyond her community, reaching national platforms. Engaging with Members of Parliament and participating in conferences, she voiced the concerns of girls and young women, striving for policy changes and tangible solutions. Her dedication also manifested in practical support, providing training in skills like tailoring and hairdressing to empower girls economically.

Challenges and Dreams: Despite her remarkable achievements, Doreen faces challenges, primarily due to limited resources. With just one tailoring machine, her dream of empowering more girls through skill training remains constrained. However, her determination remains unshaken, fueled by the support and opportunities provided by the She Leads program.
