MUCOBADI’s Young Africa Works program is revolutionizing civic engagement and accountability among the youth. By equipping young people with the tools to hold their government and leaders responsible, the program is driving tangible community improvements. The recent initiatives in Karenga, Lamwo, and Kotido districts showcase the profound impact of these efforts.

Addressing Poor Road Networks in Karenga

During the Quarterly Review and Coordination meeting in Karenga, youth leaders presented the issue of poor road networks. Their advocacy prompted stakeholders to commit to improving the roads. The youth champions diligently followed up on these commitments, and as a result, budget support from Lobalangit sub-county and Karenga District Local Government was allocated to address the issue. By the end of the January-March quarter, the 12 km road from Pire Parish to Sarachom Parish in Lobalangit Subcounty, Karenga, was graded. This significant development has greatly enhanced transportation, facilitating better access to markets and boosting local businesses for the youth and the broader community.

Tackling Water Crises in Karenga and Lamwo

The youth champions from Karenga district also focused on the critical issue of water scarcity. Collaborating with sub-county leadership and water user committees, they pushed for solutions to the water crisis that had severely impacted productivity and public health. Their efforts bore fruit with commitments to repair two boreholes and drill a new one in the coming month.

Similarly, in Lamwo district, youth champions engaged local leaders and stakeholders at Palabek Ogili sub-county to address water shortages and land disputes in Lugwar Central A Village. Their advocacy led to the repair of a broken borehole and the successful mediation of land disputes by local leaders.

Advancing Social Services in Kotido

In Kotido, youth champions focused on fulfilling pending Community Commitments (CC) action points, particularly in Kokoria. A significant breakthrough occurred when an elder provided land for the construction of a school and a police post. This development was crucial, as the lack of accessible education and security had previously led to high school dropout rates and hindered agricultural involvement. The provision of land, a commitment made by community members, was completed during the quarter, paving the way for enhanced social services.

The Power of Civic Awareness and Youth Advocacy

These successes are a testament to the power of civic awareness and youth advocacy. Through the Young Africa Works program, MUCOBADI has equipped young people with the knowledge and tools to engage with their leaders and demand accountability. The proactive efforts of youth champions have led to meaningful changes that benefit their communities, proving that empowered youth can drive substantial development and hold their leaders accountable.

As the Young Africa Works program continues to build civic awareness among the youth, it sets a powerful example of how grassroots advocacy and community engagement can lead to lasting improvements in public infrastructure, services, and overall quality of life.
