Introduction: Overcoming Early Challenges

Faith Chebet was born in Kimira Village, Buyala Parish, Iwemba Subcounty, Bugiri District. As the only girl among five children in an extended family, Faith’s early life was fraught with hardship. She faced significant challenges from a young age, losing her mother early in life and her father in 2023. Raised by her stepmother alongside her brothers, Faith’s childhood was marked by poverty, child labor, and a profound lack of parental love and support. Despite these adversities, her unwavering determination to pursue education remained a guiding force in her life.

Mentorship Impact: Finding Hope with She-Leads

Faith’s educational journey began at Kigulu Nursery and Primary School, and she later moved between schools in Uganda and Kenya, determined to continue her studies despite the odds. However, her path was fraught with interruptions due to her family’s financial instability. The turning point in Faith’s life came in June 2021, when she was introduced to the She-Leads Mentorship Program by Abudu, a Village Health Team (VHT) member and male champion under the program.

Through She-Leads, Faith received comprehensive training on girls’ rights, gender equality, advocacy, and negotiation skills. These sessions, conducted by dedicated She-Leads project staff, empowered her with the confidence and self-esteem she needed to face her challenges head-on. The mentorship provided Faith with the tools to engage effectively with stakeholders and community members, advocating for issues affecting girls and young women in her community.

Advocacy Role: A Champion for Girls’ Rights

Today, Faith stands as a beacon of hope and resilience in her community. Her advocacy work has taken her to various levels of engagement, from village meetings to national forums. Faith actively participates in advocacy meetings, where she raises awareness about the critical issues affecting girls and young women, such as child marriage and teenage pregnancy. Her compelling story and dedication have inspired many, leading to significant community changes, including the enactment of a bylaw on child marriage in Iwemba subcounty.

Faith’s ability to communicate and her strong sense of purpose have made her a respected voice in her community. She continues to work tirelessly, sharing her experiences and knowledge with other girls and young women, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and stand up for their rights.

Future Aspirations: A Vision for Education and Empowerment

Faith’s journey with She-Leads has reignited her passion for education. Currently, she is pursuing a course in laboratory technology at Chemquip Medical School in Wakiso, where she also serves as the vice guild president. Her role at the school allows her to represent the voices of girls and young women, advocating for their rights and needs.

Looking ahead, Faith dreams of continuing her education and furthering her impact as a mentor and advocate. She aspires to create more opportunities for girls in her community to access education and become empowered leaders. Faith’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship and the profound impact it can have on the lives of young women.
