Yesterday, the world came together to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year’s theme, “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment: Acting Together for Just, Peaceful, and Inclusive Societies,” speaks to the heart of what MUCOBADI does. Our work in livelihoods and rights & accountability tackles poverty, not just as a financial issue, but as a human rights challenge.

MUCOBADI’s livelihood programs give people the tools to break the cycle of poverty. By helping individuals gain skills and access resources, we make it possible for them to earn a living and support their families.

Livelihoods in Action: Mukono and Kamuli Districts

In Nabuti, Mukono District, we’ve been working with caregivers through the USAID/ICARE initiative. One key way we do this is through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). These groups help caregivers save money and access small loans, which they can then use to start or grow small businesses. This extra income makes a big difference in their day-to-day lives, helping them support their children and improve their living conditions.

We’ve seen similar success with youth groups in Kamuli District, working with ENABEL and the European Union. These young people are involved in projects like horticulture, poultry farming, and beekeeping. Not only do these projects provide income, but they also give youth a sense of purpose and independence.

Poverty as a Human Rights Issue

Poverty isn’t just about a lack of money; it’s about a lack of rights and opportunities. That’s why our rights & accountability programs focus on making sure people have the power to stand up for their rights and access justice. MUCOBADI works with communities and local governments to ensure that everyone, especially the poor, has a voice.

In Moroto and Abim Districts, for example, we’re working with the Royal Danish Embassy to increase civic engagement and accountability. Our goal is to make sure people can access basic services, like healthcare and education, without discrimination.

Working Together for a Fairer Society

Fighting poverty takes more than providing jobs or financial aid. It’s about building a fair system where everyone can thrive, regardless of their economic background. MUCOBADI’s livelihood and rights & accountability programs show that ending poverty requires both short-term solutions and long-term change.
