Human-animal conflicts pose a significant challenge in many communities, especially in regions where wildlife and agricultural activities intersect. In response, MUCOBADI has taken an innovative approach to addressing these conflicts while promoting wildlife conservation. Through the active involvement of youth, MUCOBADI aims to protect both the livelihoods of local farmers and the natural habitats of wild animals.

MUCOBADI has been instrumental in empowering youth to voice their concerns and influence decisions in various forums. Recognizing the need for action, five youth members under MUCOBADI were trained as game scouts in collaboration with the district stakeholders and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This initiative marks a significant step towards fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.

The role of these game scouts is multifaceted. They not only monitor and report wildlife activities but also educate the community on effective ways to prevent crop damage caused by wild animals. The presence of game scouts has encouraged local farmers, especially the youth, to engage in meaningful and sustainable farming practices without the constant fear of losing their crops to wildlife.

One of the critical issues addressed by the game scouts and stakeholders is the destruction of crops by wild animals, particularly elephants. This concern has been raised in various fora, prompting UWA and other stakeholders to take action. Several strategies have been proposed and implemented, including:

  1. Promoting Alternative Crops: To minimize crop destruction, UWA and stakeholders have encouraged farmers to grow crops less appealing to wild animals. For example, simsim (sesame) has been recommended as it is not eaten by elephants.
  2. Traditional Deterrents: In addition to crop selection, traditional methods such as burning cow dung have been employed. When elephants are spotted near farmland, burning cow dung helps create a smoke barrier that deters them from entering the fields.

These efforts highlight the importance of community involvement and collaboration in addressing human-animal conflicts. By empowering youth and engaging stakeholders, MUCOBADI is not only protecting the crops and livelihoods of local farmers but also contributing to wildlife conservation.

The engagement of youth in this initiative serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role young people play in sustainable development. Their participation ensures that the solutions are innovative, inclusive, and reflective of the community’s needs. As game scouts, these young individuals are at the forefront of a movement that seeks to balance the preservation of wildlife with the well-being of the community.
