On December 1, 2024, MUCOBADI joined the global community to mark World AIDS Day with the theme ‘Take the Rights Path.’ This year’s message is all about putting human rights at the center of the fight against HIV/AIDS by breaking down barriers that stop people from getting the care, treatment, and support they need.
At MUCOBADI, the USAID-funded ICARE project plays a key role in this effort. This five-year initiative focuses on preventing new HIV infections and reducing vulnerabilities for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and their caregivers.
Making a Difference Through ICARE
In 2024, the ICARE project made some big strides:
- Reaching More People: Over 51,000 OVC and caregivers were supported—106% of the annual target!
- Testing and Treatment: More than 4,500 people at risk were tested for HIV, with 26 new cases identified and enrolled in care.
- Keeping People in Care: 98% of children and adolescents living with HIV stayed on their treatment, thanks to community support and smart tools like an electronic case management system.
- Viral Load Suppression: 72% of program participants achieved viral suppression, with plans to help more adolescents meet this target.
Supporting Education and Livelihoods
MUCOBADI knows that supporting families goes beyond healthcare:
- Education Support: Helped 974 children stay in school through fee payments, scholastic materials, and re-enrollment support. Most of these children are living with HIV, and school support has helped improve their treatment adherence.
- Economic Empowerment: Supported 845 caregivers with savings groups, financial literacy training, and small business projects to help families become more self-reliant.
Community-Led Efforts
With a strong focus on community involvement, MUCOBADI trained and supported over 900 local workers—like para-social workers and case care workers—who provide hands-on help to families in need.
Celebrating in Mukono District
MUCOBADI also took part in Mukono District’s World AIDS Day event at Sseta Nazingo C/U Primary School in Nakisunga Subcounty. The event brought together the RDC, DHO, and other district leaders to celebrate progress and raise awareness.
A highlight of the event was a young mother supported by MUCOBADI showcasing her creative crafts made from recycled plastics, like baskets and mats. This not only showed her talent but also emphasized MUCOBADI’s dedication to empowering individuals and protecting the environment.
This year’s theme reminds us that everyone deserves equal access to healthcare and opportunities. At MUCOBADI, we’re committed to walking this path with the communities we serve, ensuring no one is left behind.
