November 19 marks World Toilet Day, but let’s be honest: toilets aren’t just a convenience—they’re essential for safety, health, and dignity. For girls and young women (GYW), having access to proper sanitation can change their lives in ways many of us might take for granted. At MUCOBADI, we’ve seen firsthand how improved sanitation can make a world of difference, empowering girls and boosting their ability to thrive in school, at home, and in their communities.
Why Sanitation Matters for Girls and Young Women
Think about it: without clean, private toilets, girls face big challenges. They’re more likely to miss school during their periods, suffer from infections, or feel unsafe using public or makeshift toilets. The shame, stigma, and health risks all add up, limiting their opportunities and undermining their confidence. For MUCOBADI, changing this isn’t just a goal—it’s a must.
How MUCOBADI Is Making a Difference
- Building Better Toilets, Building Confidence
- We’ve worked hard to improve sanitation in schools and community centers, constructing gender-segregated latrines that offer privacy and safety. These aren’t just toilets; they’re confidence boosters.
- Smashing Period Stigma with Menstrual Hygiene Support
- Menstruation shouldn’t mean missing school or hiding in shame. Our menstrual hygiene programs provide reusable pads, hygiene workshops, and spaces for open discussions.
- And it’s not just for girls—our male champions and community leaders are stepping up to break down harmful taboos.
- Mariam’s Story: “I used to miss school during my period because I was scared of being embarrassed. Now, I have the supplies and support I need. I feel confident being in class every day,” says Mariam, a 16-year-old from Kamuli.
- Communities Taking Charge
- Our Community-Led Total Sanitation approach empowers communities to lead the charge in improving their sanitation. It’s about everyone coming together to make changes that stick, reducing open defecation and keeping the environment cleaner and safer.
- Results: Communities across our districts have seen fewer waterborne diseases and a healthier environment for everyone—especially girls.
From Toilets to Advocacy: Empowering GYW as Leaders
Sanitation isn’t just about building toilets; it’s about giving girls a platform to lead and advocate for what they need. MUCOBADI helps train GYW to speak up, whether it’s at local council meetings or larger policy discussions. Their voices are making waves and driving change.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Of course, we’re not done. Social norms, limited funds, and infrastructure gaps remain big hurdles. But every improved facility, every educated community member, and every empowered girl brings us closer. MUCOBADI is sticking with it, working alongside local leaders, governments, and community champions.
Looking Forward
World Toilet Day reminds us of something simple yet powerful: every girl deserves a safe place to go to the bathroom. It’s about dignity, health, and equality. At MUCOBADI, we’re committed to making this a reality. Together, we can keep the momentum going and make sure that sanitation is a right, not a privilege.
