Richard Ouma is a young farmer of 28 years old who lives in YEPA B village, Kitgum District, Northern Uganda. Richard’s story is not just about overcoming physical challenges but also about breaking through societal barriers and achieving remarkable success, thanks to the the Young Africa Works — Markets for Youth Program.

Living with a disability, Richard’s opportunities were limited. He engaged in subsistence farming with local seeds, barely yielding enough for his own consumption. Despite tending to ten bee hives to supplement his income, he felt isolated and disconnected from his community. However, fate took a turn when Youth Champion Okema Charles extended an invitation for Richard to join the Yepa piggery VSLA youth group.

The youth group, supported by the Young Africa Works program, provided Richard with invaluable training sessions. From learning to establish a Village Savings and Loan Association to mastering business planning and adopting best agronomic practices, Richard’s skills and confidence began to flourish. He recalls, “After these trainings, I gained the courage and confidence to expand my beekeeping venture from 10 to 35 hives.”

The pivotal moment came when Charles introduced Richard to Agro-tourism Association (ATA), opening doors to a wider market for his honey. Armed with newfound knowledge and connections, Richard embraced change wholeheartedly. He switched to high-quality seeds like DK 8031 maize and expanded his farming operation to two acres, now flourishing with promising crops at the flowering stage.

Charles, recognizing Richard as an early adopter with a transformed mindset, witnessed firsthand the remarkable evolution. He notes, “Richard’s journey epitomizes the essence of our program. From isolation and self-doubt to becoming a confident and successful farmer, he now fearlessly showcases his products at exhibitions organized by ATA.”

Richard’s story is a testament to the empowering impact of the Young Africa Works program. By providing access to education, training, and market linkages, it has enabled individuals like Richard to break free from the shackles of limited opportunities and societal stigma. Through his determination and the program’s support, Richard has not only uplifted himself but has also become an inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
