Today we shine a spotlight on a young man from Kigulu village in Eastern Uganda, named Abudu, a male youth champion under the SHELEADS Project, implemented by MUCOBADI. Witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by girls, from forced marriages to limited access to education, Abudu knew he had to take action. His story is a testament to the crucial role men can play in advocating for the rights of the girl child.

Early Struggles and Awakening

Abudu’s story begins with his own struggles with education. Despite facing financial difficulties that forced him to pause his studies, he never lost sight of the injustices surrounding him. Returning to his village, he observed the entrenched gender norms that deprived girls of their rights and opportunities. Girls were often seen merely as a source of wealth through early marriages, denied the chance to pursue an education or make decisions about their own lives.

Joining She Leads: A Transformative Journey

Abudu’s life took a new direction when he became involved with She Leads, a program aimed at empowering girls and young women. Recognizing the need for male allies in this fight, Abudu eagerly embraced the opportunity to become a male champion for girls’ rights. Through She Leads, he gained the skills and confidence to engage with stakeholders, challenge harmful gender norms, and advocate for change within his community.

Education and Advocacy

Abudu underwent training on advocacy, lobbying, and negotiation skills, deepening his understanding of gender equality and girls’ rights. Armed with this knowledge, he worked alongside girls and young women advocates to address issues such as child marriage and teenage pregnancy. Together, they organized community engagement meetings, conducted sensitization campaigns, and successfully lobbied for the enactment of a bylaw on child protection in their sub-county.

A Vision for an Equal World

Abudu’s journey as a male champion is driven by a vision of an equal world where all children, regardless of gender, can thrive. He encourages girls to focus on their education and urges parents and stakeholders to challenge harmful social norms that perpetuate inequality. By advocating for the rights of the girl child, Abudu is not only transforming his community but also paving the way for a brighter future for generations to come.

Abudu’s story highlights the vital role that men can play in supporting the rights of the girl child. By becoming allies and advocates, men like Abudu can help challenge harmful gender norms, promote equality, and create opportunities for girls to fulfill their potential. In doing so, they not only empower girls and young women but also contribute to the building of a more just and equitable society for all.
